It has been a year in the making but it has finally happened. All the community based Basketball programs in Southeast Edmonton have amalgamated and will now operate as the South East Basketball Association under the name South East Swarm. This amalgamation consists of the four Communities (see the letters of support) in the southeast that ran Basketball Programs:
Gold Bar Community Meadows Community Southwood Community Woodvale Community
Why the amalgamation? Here is a list of some of the major reasons:
1) Sustainability- in the past when a Community Director retired so did the program in that community.
2) More efficient use of volunteers- an equipment manager would do the work for the entire organization rather than having one for each community
3) Renewed enthusiasm- an elected executive every 2 years will ensure fresh ideas and help prevent volunteer burn out
4) Fund raising- because we are a registered society and we have sufficient numbers we can apply for a casino (most casinos bring in about $80,000) and Government Grants which can allow us to provide camps, coaching clinics and extra merchandise for our players.
5) Player and Coach Development- because the numbers are there we will be able to run player and coach development clinics
What are the numbers?
We expect between 35-40 teams with a total number of participants in the 400-500 range. This is compared to the average participant level at the Community level of 100.
How will the program change? You should see very little change in the way the program is ran other than at the administrative level. Players will be placed on teams based on where they live, availability of schools and coaches. If a player wishes to be with a particular coach or player we will accommodate as best we can. The only try outs will be in the A Division, and this has been the situation for three years. Those that tryout for the A Division and are not chosen are simply placed back on team in the regular league. This year all players will wear new Swarm Jerseys. Each player will also receive a pair of shorts, which are theirs to keep, at no charge. This being our first year there will be some growing pains. To help make this a positive experience for the players it is hoped that many of you will help by volunteering.
I hope each of you have a good basketball experience this season.
